PLACEMAKING

Some places don’t need reinvention. They need a brand that helps people see what’s already there, and what’s possible next. Lake County partnered with BLKDOG to build an economic development and placemaking brand that supports both growth and belonging. The work included a new place identity, an investment-ready website, and a full suite of marketing tools designed to attract businesses, support local entrepreneurs, and invite visitors and future residents into the story.

ABOUT

Tucked below the dormant volcano of Mt. Konocti and wrapped around the oldest lake in North America, Lake County has long been a Northern California escape. Today, it is also a region in motion. Population growth, expanding industries, and seven Tribal Nations woven into the community’s past and present call for a modern identity that can speak to multiple audiences at once.

The goal was to create a brand that strengthens economic development while honoring place. That meant celebrating heritage and landscape, but also clearly communicating opportunity. From clean energy and agriculture to medical services, education, small business development, and outdoor recreation, Lake County needed messaging and tools that make it easy to understand what’s here, why it matters, and how to take the next step.

We began with a discovery process rooted in listening, working alongside county leadership, business owners, Tribal partners, and residents. Those insights shaped a brand built on authenticity and forward motion. It reflects the balance Lake County is known for: rugged independence and lakeside calm, deep roots and entrepreneurial drive.

From there, we created a visual identity inspired by the landscape and history, then brought it into a fully accessible, data-forward website built for both residents and decision-makers. The site highlights sector strengths, success stories, regulatory pathways, and site selection tools that support real investment conversations. Paired with profiles, guides, and outreach materials, the new system gives Lake County a clear, unified platform for placemaking, recruitment, and long-term economic growth.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Lake County’s identity emerged from the community’s voice. Through guided discovery, conversations with Tribal representatives, collaboration with the Lake County EDC and tourism partners, and research into local industries, we identified the values that unite the region: independence, resourcefulness, connection to the land, and pride in building something meaningful.

By grounding the brand in both heritage and opportunity, the final identity resonates across audiences. It speaks to business owners looking for the right conditions to grow, families seeking a slower pace with real services, and investors tracking emerging industries shaped by clean air, rich soil, and unmatched natural beauty.
