CITY OF SAN ANTONIO, TX ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT
Even the most straightforward documents deserve intentional, thoughtful design. BLKDOG partnered with the City of San Antonio, TX’s Economic Development Department to produce a more effective annual report. The project focused on organizing complex information, elevating visual presentation, and creating a report that felt polished, credible, and easy to navigate within an established government brand system.
ABOUT
This project is a strong example of government report design that needed to succeed across multiple formats, and that could work within a formal public-sector structure while still feeling elevated, thoughtful, and highly usable. The EDD team wanted a more visually compelling presentation than in previous years, but the final piece still needed to remain brand-consistent and appropriate for a government audience.
Several sections also needed stronger visual storytelling, particularly performance measures, strategic priorities, and impact-driven program content.

We began with mood boards to establish a refreshed design direction that remained aligned with the client’s tone and existing brand toolkit. From there, the process moved into layout development, content organization, hierarchy refinement, and iterative revisions shaped by client and leadership feedback.
Key sections were reworked to support better storytelling, metrics were integrated more intentionally into the report flow, and dense content areas were structured to improve clarity without losing important detail. As the project evolved, the team also worked through changes to page count, layout structure, photo assets, section hierarchy, content edits, and production requirements.
Reports often need to communicate with leadership, internal teams, partners, and the public at the same time. Strong design helps make that communication clearer, more navigable, and more effective without compromising institutional standards.
This project gave the City of San Antonio Economic Development Department a more intentional and visually effective way to communicate its annual accomplishments. By improving layout, hierarchy, accessibility, and visual storytelling, the project helped transform a complex annual report into a clearer and more engaging public-facing piece.
